A panel of mostly female appellate judges has overturned Harvey Weinstein’s 2020 rape conviction. They ruled the trial court erred by allowing testimony from women not directly involved in the case.

The New York’s highest court’s decision called for a new trial, citing “egregious” judicial errors. Despite the overturned conviction, Weinstein remains imprisoned for a separate 2022 conviction in Los Angeles.

Judge Madeline Singas dissented: “The majority’s determination perpetuates outdated notions of sexual violence and allows predators to escape accountability.”

Weinstein’s lawyer Arthur Aidala: “We all worked very hard and this is a tremendous victory for every criminal defendant in the state of New York.”
